Scholarships and Grants – Frequently Asked Questions

Who may receive the scholarships and grants?

Under the Papawai and Kaikōkirikiri Trusts Amendment Act 2016, scholarships are available for the post-primary education of children who have a whakapapa in relation to the tangata whenua of Wairarapa.

What types of scholarships and grants are available?

  1. Secondary School Scholarships

The Scholarships are available to students studying full-time at secondary schools in Years 9,10,11,12 and 13.

The amount of the Scholarship is dependent on the pool of funds available and the number of applications received.

Scholarships can go towards the cost of uniforms, boarding fees, stationary, activity fees or school trips.

When do the Applications close?

Applications are available from 1 September and close 31 October annually.  Due to the volume of applications late applications may not be considered.

When will the Scholarships be announced?

The Scholarships will be announced by letter to the applicant in December and to the school in January.

  1. Leadership and Personal Development Scholarship

Scholarships are available annually, With a total pool of $8,000 for secondary school students in Years 11, 12 and 13.

This Scholarship is provided to support students to attend  Leadership and Personal Development courses/programmes, not otherwise funded through the school.

When do the applications close?

Applications are available from 1 July to 30 June annually within the budgeted allocation set by the Board*.

When will the scholarships be announced?

The scholarships are announced to the applicant once the Board have approved the application.

3. Discretionary Grant

This Grant is available annually for years 9 – 13 to provide students experiencing hardship to meet school costs such as assistance to purchase a uniform or school books, school clothing and aids to support learning. 

Evidence of support from the School Principle/Dean/Counsellor must be provided.

This grant is paid on provision of a receipt, or directly to the supplier of the goods on Invoice to the Trust, or to the school and is funded at the discretion of the Board. The fund is open throughout the year.

What does the Board do with the applications?

The Board:

(a)       Verifies the whakapapa.

(b)       Notes the potential and study ethic of each applicant.

The Board uses the following:

  • The information supplied by parents and students in the application form.
  • The information supplied by the Principal.
  • Prepares a list of the applicants and allocates the available funds accordingly.

 

Does the Board grant every application?

It is inevitable that some applications will be unsuccessful.  However, the Board encourages all applicants to:

(a)       Continue their studies.

(b)       Accept invitations to participate in Trusts’ activities; and

(c)       Apply again.

 

What is the most common reason for not receiving a scholarship?

There are two main reasons why scholarships are not granted.

  • The scholarship form is not fully completed.
  • The scholarship form arrives at the Trusts office after the closing date.
