Who may receive the scholarships and grants?

Under the Papawai and Kaikōkirikiri Trusts Amendment Act 2016, scholarships are available for the post-primary education of children who have a whakapapa in relation to the tangata whenua of Wairarapa.

 

What types of scholarships and grants are available?

 

 1. Secondary School Scholarships

The scholarships are available to students studying full-time at secondary schools in Years 9,10, 11, 12 and 13.

The amount of the scholarship is dependent on the pool of funds available and the number of applications received.

When do the applications close?

The applications for 2021 must reach the Trusts office by the closing date.  Due to the volume of applications late applications may not be considered.

When will the scholarships be announced?

The scholarships for 2021 will be announced by letter to the applicant in December 2020 and to the school in January 2021.

2. Leadership and Personal Development Scholarship

Scholarships are available annually, With a total pool of $8000 for secondary school students in Years 11, 12 and 13.

When do the applications close?

Applications are available from 1 February and close 31 March annually.

When will the scholarships be announced?

The scholarships are announced to the applicant and to the school annually in April.

What does the Board do with the applications?

The Board:

(a)       Verifies the whakapapa;

(b)       Notes the potential and study ethic of each applicant.

The Board uses the following:

  • The information supplied by parents and students in the application form;
  • The information supplied by the Principal;
  • Prepares a list of the applicants and allocates the available funds accordingly.

 

Does the Board grant every application?

It is inevitable that some applications will be unsuccessful.  However, the Board encourages all applicants to:

(a)       Continue their studies;

(b)       Accept invitations to participate in Trusts activities; and

(c)       Apply again.

 

What is the most common reason for not receiving a scholarship?

There are two main reasons why scholarships are not granted.

  • The scholarship form is not fully completed;
  • The scholarship form arrives at the Trusts office after the closing date.
